The DVD Shelf Movie Reviews: Godzilla 1954

In this extra large episode of The DVD Shelf Movie Reviews, I’ll delve deep into the creation of one of the most famous giant monsters in movie history, Godzilla.  Born out of post-World War II Japanese sensibilities, Godzilla has gone on to star in nearly thirty films over the years, but none are as dark, ominous, and captivating as the original 1954 black-and-white film that started it all.  This episode fully explores the origin of the ideas for Godzilla and includes a review the the Criterion Collection Blu-ray release with its hearty helping of special features that are sure to please fans and non-fans alike!  The DVD Shelf Movie Reviews is hosted by David Rose. And don't forget to hit the HD button on the video player!

The DVD Shelf Movie Reviews: Fright Night

Remember when vampires were actually intimidating and nightmare-inducing?  I know, it does feel like ages, but I’m here with a new episode of the The DVD Shelf Movie Reviews to take you back to a place where vampires exploded in daylight, not sparkled!  In this episode, we’ll be taking a look at the 1985 film Fright Night, a classic horror flick from an era when vampires were actually scary.  I’ll give a little background about the film and its hard-to-find sequel, Fright Night Part II.  Then we’ll take a look at the 2011 remake starring Colin Farrell and see how it compares to the original.  Finally, I’ll give the original Fright Night DVD my final recommendation.  The DVD Shelf Movie Reviews is hosted by David Rose.  All this and more at your online destination where movies are celebrated, not incinerated!

The DVD Shelf Movie Reviews: An American Werewolf in London

It’s a super-sized Halloween edition of The DVD Shelf Movie Reviews!  In this episode we’ll take a look at the classic 80’s horror/comedy An American Werewolf in London directed by John Landis, a pet project of Landis’ since over a decade before the film’s production.  We’ll check out the inspiration for him to make the film and what effect the film had on his future directing career, highlighted by his directing of Michael Jackson’s Thriller later on.  We’ll take an in-depth look at the film’s Oscar-winning make-up effects, created by special effects wizard Rick Baker, and see why they help make the film so unforgettable.  Finally, we’ll take a look at the film’s Full Moon Edition DVD and its generous helping of special features.  From werewolves to dancing zombies – it must be Halloween!  All this and more at your online destination where movies are celebrated, not incinerated!
